Harnessing the Power of the Sun: Solar Water Heating

Solar water heating systems consist of solar collectors, a heat transfer fluid, a heat exchanger, and a storage tank. Here's how it works:

  • Heat Transfer Fluid: A heat transfer fluid, often a mixture of water and glycol, circulates through the solar collectors. As it passes through, it absorbs the heat energy from the sun this is called an Indirect Solar Water Heating System that is used in areas that experience freezing conditions. Glycol prevents the heat exchanger (solar panel) from bursting when exposed to freezing temperatures.In most coastal areas that do not experience freezing a Direct Solar Water Heating used is used and the use of glycol is not necessary. A Direct system is more effective than and Indirect system.
  • Heat Exchanger: The heat transfer fluid then flows through a heat exchanger, where it transfers its heat to the water in the storage tank. This process raises the water temperature without the water actually passing through the solar collectors.
  • Storage Tank: The hot water is stored in an insulated tank for later use. Some systems use a backup heating element for cloudy days or when additional hot water is needed.
